Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using such drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural management.
